Medigap Plan D is one of the ten Medicare Supplemental options you can purchase to provide coverage beyond Original Medicare benefits. (Please do not confuse Plan D with PART D, which is coverage for prescription drug medication. You can find out about Medicare Part D drug policies here.)
A Medicare Supplement Plan D policy covers most of the out-of-pocket costs or gaps in Medicare for you, with the exception of the Medicare Part B deductible and Part B excess charges. An excess charge is an additional amount up to 15% you will pay if a medical provider charges more than the Medicare standard amount. Since Medicare is trying to collect the deductible and allowing the excess charge you will normally have to pay these costs under Original Medicare. Medicare Plan D doesn’t provide coverage for these costs either. However, Medicare Plan D covers all of the most important out-of-pocket costs, like the 20% cost for outpatient services that you would otherwise have to pay.
We can help you compare pricing between Medigap Plan D and Plans F or G, which have richer benefits. This will help you determine if the savings is worth the additional premium cost to you. Some people would rather pay a little more for their medigap if they know that all the out-of-pocket deductibles, coinsurance and copayments will be covered. Others don’t mind having a little cost-sharing to get lower monthly premiums. We can help you examine your medicare plan options.
Medicare beneficiaries often confuse Part D and Plan D. And no wonder, with all these letters floating around, it’s hard to get the terminology down. Just remember Medicare “Part” D is a prescription drug program available to all beneficiaries in Original Medicare. It’s your coverage for the pharmacy. Medicare Supplement (or Medigap ) D, on the other hand, is just one of the ten supplements that’s available to you.
